WindowSwap: Windows Into Others’ Worlds

Let’s be honest, after spending months and months at home, we could all use a change of scenery! Instead of continuing to stare longingly out of your own window, it’s so easy to visit the WindowSwap portal to see views shared by strangers around the world.

For instance, look out a virtual window in Aeschiried, Switzerland, where potted plants and leafy vines frame a lush mountain scene dotted with red-roofed barns. Then go see cars stream through a busy intersection in Mexico City. Next rest your eyes on makeup brushes, notebooks, and a pink face mask line at a desk in Glasgow, Scotland. Finally, watch the sunset low behind the silvery New York skyline, as seen from Long Island.

From quiet villages in northern Spain to magnificent pyramids in Giza, Egypt, WindowSwap will give you beautiful views into someone else’s life.

The Story of WindowSwap

Singapore-based couple Sonali Ranjit and Vaishnav Balasubramaniam started WindowSwap as a quarantine project among friends. However, in June, the pair expanded the project to include online submissions.

As noted on the website’s “About” page, “WindowSwap is here to fill that deep void in our wanderlust hearts by allowing us to look through someone else’s window, somewhere in the world, for a while. [It is] a place on the internet where all we travel-hungry fools share our ‘window views’ to help each other feel a little bit better till we can (responsibly) explore our beautiful planet again.”

WindowSwap allows you to navigate continents instantaneously by clicking a button labeled “Open a new window somewhere in the world.” Short video clips appear at random, highlighting diverse locales such as Sankt Augustin, Germany; Glanamman, Wales; Bangalore, India; Istanbul, Turkey; Singapore; Cordoba, Argentina; Okinawa, Japan; San Francisco; and São Paulo, Brazil.

Share Your View With the World

You can share your window or balcony view, too. All you have to do is take a 10-minute HD horizontal recording of your view and submit it here.

“All kinds of windows are welcome…what might look like a simple view for one person could be another’s idea of heaven.

So until you can jet off on your next exotic vacation, let these views take you away, and perhaps they will help you craft the perfect bucket list.
