Life Coaching: The Career I Was Always Meant to Pursue
Hi there! I wanted to check in and share my new and exciting project with you: I am becoming a life coach!
So you might ask, “Why in the world did you decide to pursue this career?” The answer is simple: When I was a practicing optometrist for 20 years, I often found myself serving as a friend and a confidant to my patients. After a career of seeing hundreds of patients per month, I knew for sure that people needed someone to talk to.
I didn’t have any training in coaching. But I knew that women needed someone to listen to them. And being there for them, in this way, was the most fulfilling part of my job.
Forging a new path:
So fast forward to my life and what’s happened over the past several years.
I got married in 2018 and moved to LA with my new husband. While running my practice and a philanthropic project from afar, I quickly discovered I found little joy in remote leadership.
I knew that my true joy came from working with people directly.
So, I sold my practice and was open to finding something new.
Without a clear plan, I started taking classes and studying new topics, mostly about spirituality and personal growth. I’ve always been curious about what makes people tick and wanted to know more about myself, my truth, and my spiritual path. All of these factors moved me unknowingly toward becoming a life coach.
Surprise! You never know what will set you on your path.
Still, I hadn’t made that clear decision to get serious.
Serendipitously, one of my closest friends said to me one day, “Tricia, you should be a life coach! You would be really good at that.”
Finally, the lightbulb went on!
** So, that’s a little note I want to share. If you see something in a friend or family member, tell them! You might be the reason they decide to take a leap of faith.
Next up, finding a program of study was the easy part. That’s because, for over 10 years, I’ve been a fan of Martha Beck’s work. In the self-help area, she’s one of the people I admire most. She’s a woman with endless wisdom and clarity. So, with a few clicks, I signed up for her Wayfinder Life Coach 10-month program.
My focus with coaching:
I’ve decided to narrow my focus to three specific things.
Finding love:
The first is about relationships and helping women find love because this is an area in which I’ve had a lot of experience!

In the wild world of dating, I was able to manifest a wonderful partnership, something I’m very proud of.
Coaching can be very effective because together, we work through beliefs you may have that are likely influencing your dating life. Subtle shifts can lead to massive change in openness and perspective.
Thriving as a single mom:
I was a single mom for 15 years. Societally, I just found it very isolating. I struggled to find coaches or therapists offering frameworks to support women in feeling balanced, fulfilled, and thriving as single moms. Helping women to achieve that is something I’m deeply passionate about.

A continuous path of spirituality:
The third is a focus on deepening a sense of spirituality. Spirituality is connected to and is a thread through both areas above. Discovering a sense of purpose and meaning, mixed with comfort and surrender, forms a baseline from which navigating single parenting and new relationships can thrive!
Personalizing my program as I go:
Something unique about coaching is that learning the skills through a particular program forms a template for you to serve as a coach and help others.
Then, it’s up to you to personalize your unique program around your life experiences and areas of interest. That’s amazing because it allows coaches to bring themselves and their experiences to their clients.
How I See Life Coaching:
I view coaching as offering a glowing reflection. It’s like a shimmery mirror because coaching is about holding space for clients to discover their truth.
I’m learning that the most important key to success as a coach is presence. Coaches don’t tell clients what to do. They listen deeply, ask thoughtful questions, and partner with their client to help them see more clearly what they already know.
Coaching is about working wholeheartedly within the present moment. Clients walk away feeling empowered and hopeful.
